AutoBild Allrad magazine brought a detailed test of tires for SUVs and crossovers in 2023. The testing was carried out on the popular BMW X3 model and tires in the size 225/60 R18 were evaluated, which is one of the most commonly used sizes for SUVs and CUVs.
To ensure an objective result, AutoBild also included a reference summer tire in the comparison, which made it possible to accurately assess the performance differences between the individual models. The test thus provided a clear picture of which tires offer the best combination of safety, driving characteristics and efficiency for the SUV segment.
Wet performance
In wet conditions, the Pirelli Scorpion Winter 2 stood out, achieving the best results in wet braking. The Goodyear UltraGrip Performance Plus SUV model showed excellent wet handling. The Bridgestone Blizzak LM005 became the absolute leader in the wet circle, straight and lateral aquaplaning tests.
Snow performance
- Two tires stood out in the test: the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P and the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 SUV, which ranked highest in the overall rating - thanks to their ideal balance of performance in all tested conditions.
- The Continental WinterContact TS 870 P demonstrated balanced properties in various weather conditions, which resulted in high safety parameters and excellent handling - including snow, wet and dry.
- The Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 SUV proved to be a true snow specialist, with excellent performance in frost and all other conditions. It was also very quiet and pleasant to drive, despite its higher rolling resistance.
Conclusion of the winter tire test
The Auto Bild Allrad 2023 winter tire test clearly showed that modern SUV winter tires can offer high safety and reliable performance in all conditions - from snow, through wet to dry asphalt.
The best overall results were achieved by the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P and the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 SUV. The Continental impressed with its balance and reliable behavior in all disciplines, while the Michelin confirmed its position as a specialist in snow performance, where it excelled in braking, traction and handling.
In addition to them, other manufacturers also ranked well - Pirelli, Bridgestone, Goodyear and Hankook, who offered quality results in individual tests, but it turned out that each tire has its own strengths and weaknesses.
Overall, the choice of winter tires for SUVs should be guided by the driver's priorities:
- Those who drive mostly in snowy conditions will appreciate
- Anyone looking for universal safety and balanced performance should go for the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P
- Sportier SUVs will benefit from models with better dry handling.
