When to switch to winter tires
It's the temperature, not the snow, that matters. Summer compound hardens below about 7°C and loses grip even on dry roads. If temperatures drop to this point and you're not planning on staying warm for much longer, it's time to change tires — typically late October to mid-November.
In Slovakia, winter tires are mandatory from November 15 to March 31 if there is a continuous layer of snow, ice, or frost on the road. Outside of these conditions, the law does not directly mandate changing tires, but with summer compounds in the cold, you extend your braking distance even where there is no snow.
What tread depth is still enough?
The legal minimum for winter tires is 3 mm (for summer tires 1.6 mm). However, the difference compared to a new tire is noticeable much earlier — below 4 mm, the ability to drain water and snow from the tread decreases and the risk of aquaplaning increases. If you are approaching 4 mm and you have the whole winter ahead of you, it is worth considering replacing it.
What does the marking on the side mean?
On the sidewall of the tire you will find the size in the form 205/55 R16 91V — width in millimeters, height as a percentage of the width, rim diameter in inches, load index and speed index. For winter, the 3PMSF symbol (mountain peak with snowflake) is important, which confirms proven performance in winter conditions. M+S itself is a weaker designation — the manufacturer can give it without a test.
