The best footwear for off-road vehicles and regular asphalt
Are you planning to fit your pick-up or off-road SUV with universal All-Terrain (A/T) tires, but don't want to sacrifice safety on asphalt and comfort during everyday driving? A large comparison test of nine popular A/T tires from the lighter "on-road" category (tested on a sharp Ford Ranger Raptor) revealed huge differences. While some brands handle both asphalt and gravel with ease, others can unpleasantly betray you on a wet road.
The overall winners in balance on both asphalt and light off-road terrain were the Continental Terrain Contact AT, Goodyear Wrangler All Terrain Adventure, and Firestone Destination A/T2.
Wet and dry pavement: When do critical situations arise?
- Kingdom of safety on water: Continental and Firestone demonstrated absolutely top-notch grip, driver feedback, and short braking distances on water. They were excellently seconded by the balanced Goodyear and Yokohama tires.
- Flop on wet asphalt: The Nitto Terra Grappler G2 tire had such low grip on water that it was the only one in the test to fly off the track. It poses a high risk on wet roads.
- On-road comfort in dry conditions: On dry asphalt, Goodyear dominated with the most precise and fastest steering, closely followed by Firestone, Pirelli, and Travelstar.
Gravel and dirt: Where are the real off-road champions born?
- Off-road stars: When the Raptor hit gravel and dirt roads, the BFGoodrich Trail Terrain TA and Toyo Open Country A/T III brands dominated. BFGoodrich confirmed its off-road DNA – offering the fastest time, the best traction, and superb control in a skid.
- Disappointment off the asphalt: The Continental tire, which excelled on water, had the lowest grip on gravel, and its rear axle tended to slide uncontrollably. Yokohama similarly struggled on gravel and dirt.
Noise, comfort, and consumption (Rolling resistance)
- Quietest and most comfortable: If you're looking for a tire that won't turn your car into a noisy tank, the clear winner is the Yokohama Geolandar AT G015. It offers premium cabin quietness and exemplary bump damping.
- Noisy compromise: The budget Travelstar Ecopath AT tire didn't fail on asphalt, but it caused unbearable tread noise in the cabin and unpleasantly shook the car over potholes.
- Lowest fuel consumption: The most economical tires with the lowest rolling resistance were Firestone, BFGoodrich, and Pirelli.
Verdict: Which All-Terrain tire should you choose?
- Best choice for asphalt and regular roads (90% asphalt / 10% off-road): Continental Terrain Contact AT and Firestone Destination A/T2.
- Best all-rounder for everything: Goodyear Wrangler All Terrain Adventure and Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus.
- For real off-road and gravel driving: BFGoodrich Trail Terrain TA or Toyo Open Country A/T III.
- For maximum comfort and a quiet ride: Yokohama Geolandar AT G015.
